报告题目：Phase transitions under high pressure

摘要：Pressure profoundly alters matter and materials. The development of ultrahigh-pressure devices, to compress samples to sustained multimegabar pressures together with synchrotron x-ray techniques to probe material properties in situ, has enabled the exploration of novel properties of materials at extreme conditions. In this talk, a few questions related to phase transitions of materials under pressure will be discussed - how do the transitions happen and progress between the parent and product phases in reconstructive phase transitions? what is the role of electrons in structural phase transitions? what is the nature of liquid-liquid transitions? A few examples will be presented to address these questions.
报告人简介：Guoyin Shen’s primary research has been to examine the behavior of relevant Earth materials at Earth’s deep pressure-temperature conditions, polyamorphism in liquids and amorphous materials, and new states of matter and their emergent properties under extreme conditions. He has authored or co-authored 190 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 10 review articles or book chapters. These are all primarily synchrotron-based research, benefitted by the breakthrough advancement in high pressure synchrotron capabilities at HPCAT. In 2005, Shen joined HPCAT as the project manager, and has been the director of HPCAT since 2010. Under his leadership and working closely with users’ community, HPCAT has become the nation’s frontier facility for high pressure synchrotron research, with a myriad of new techniques developed, established, and operational for routine use by more than 500 users per year for the last ten years. Shen earned a B.S. in Geochemistry from Zhejiang University, China, in 1982. He earned his Ph.D. in Mineral Physics at Uppsala University, Sweden, in 1994.
